We can find quotes or phrases every day, no matter where we are in this world. Whether they come from the internet, social media or ones we thought up in our own mind, they all hold meaning. The quote means something to the individual that has discovered it. Each and every one of us has our own interpretation to what a particular quote means. Some people have similar views on different topics and opinions but not everyone does, which is perfectly fine.

We all have opinions that differ from each other and there is nothing wrong with that. Quotes and phrases are a great example of that because a quote could mean one thing to one person but something completely different to another individual. Even the people who came up with and wrote the quotes originally might have had a different meaning to what they wrote than what someone reading it might have. Here are a couple of quotes that have caught my eye and how I've interpreted them.

“Do not judge others simply by their preconceptions, and judgement based on their appearance. You assumed that I have patience… You all fail to measure your own capacity and my capacity. As a result, you lie here, beaten.” —Uchiha Itachi

I remember there’s one time I was watching a YouTube video about people performing using street pianos, something made me amazed. After an English guy who played ‘Armin Van Buuren - In and Out of Love’, came a boy around 10 in his age. There was a quite huge crowd back then. People were casting doubtful glances at the boy who took the seat after the English guy left. From the video, I could here some of them whispering to each other like ‘What is he doing here?’, ‘I bet he’ll play Twinkle Star’ or ‘Doesn’t he have shame?’. The boy’s fingers moved swiftly across the keyboard. He played ‘Turkish March’ and Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement’ (not smooth, quite a few mistakes but I can’t complaint. 10-years old doing the hardest movement of Moonlight Sonata, man!). The crowd gasped in surprise. Nobody talked during his performance. People are always deceived by what they see and live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true, don’t you think?

“Do not mind anything that anyone tells you about anyone else. Judge everyone and everything for yourself.” —Henry James

Gossipers are everywhere. When a lie spread only once, nobody will believe it. When a lie spread a hundred times, people will start believing it. I always heard my friends saying ‘Eh, you know that girl from xxx class, she’s from a poor family…I bet she never tried Starbucks before’ or ‘Hey, you know that guy from the other class? He looks ugly as hell ha-ha-ha, what a loser.’ But does that mean they have attitude problems? Does that mean they wouldn’t be successful in the future? I’ll ask you this question: Would you choose a friend that fails every test but will always be there for you or a friend that scores every test but despise students weaker than him?

One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood.” — Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Katelyn and I have been best friends for 4 years and still counting. Even though we’re not in the same class, we still text each other from time to time and hang out during holidays. Who say best friends never quarrel before? I bet we all quarreled with our best friends a lot especially during primary school. Sentences like ‘I don’t want friend you liao!’ and ‘Eh, don’t friend her/him ah!’ were always heard in the younger days. When Kate and I quarrel, it doesn’t last for long. After spending a few hours of cold war, either of us will be the first to stand up and apologize. Funny thing was when one of us apologize, the other one will also apologize and stated how childish we were arguing over silly stuff. We would talk about trying to be more understanding in the future and promise each other to control our temper. Then, we’re back to normal, as good as before.
