The Rubbish Dump
On the 1st February, our class had been divided into groups and had a sketch based on both books, Changing Their Skies, stories from Africa and Leaving No Footprints, stories from Asia. My group, was a bit fortunate to get a story called The Rubbish Dump, written by Steve Chimombo because it's less complicated and short.
The Sketch
We were given almost a week to plan our sketch. Everything was going really fine. I got the role of acting as Joey's mom, which is a minor character and had not much screen time. Before that, I want to express my gratitude to Jie Hong. He simplified the story and made a rough play script for everyone to memorize, even if teacher say we're not allowed to have a script. I felt bad for him because on the discussion day, I had activities and couldn't stay back longer to help out. He did them all by himself at home and we kept on thanking him for his efforts. During the presentation was fun. Everyone tried their best and successfully put the audience into stitches. Jia Wei, playing the main character as Joey, was supposed to slip and drop into the rubbish pit but due to there was no holes in the classroom, he suddenly vanished in sight and made everyone cracking in tears. He pretend to fall on the ground without warning and I couldn't stop grinning at the unexpected scene. Mazambezi, played by Xin Ying was awesome. Despite there were lots of conversation between Joey and Mazambezi, Jia Wei and Xin Ying memorized them all perfectly and managed to present them all out (Though they nearly screwed up the last part). Joel did great too, flying the paper plane and making sound effects to lighten up the mood because there aren't any more characters for him to cast. After the play, we received a round of big applause from the audience. We were really proud and satisfied.
Learning Process
Throughout the process, it was awesome and fun. We tried not to but ended up laughing a lot watching the gag reels made by Joel and Jia Wei. What I learned from it were we needed more teamwork and opinions. We always ended up with one of us speaking only and the rest nodded along, agreeing whatever he or she said, even though they wanted to say something. Probably we're still awkward with each other (we need more time, I guess). But, my group grasped the gist of the story well and overall, the story was well presented (not to mention I cut my lines shorter and shorter until me, myself was surprised either). To make it better, as I said, we need to break the wall of awkwardness between each other because this might make us understand what our opinion is better. For me, I think I need to work harder memorizing my lines and participate more in the discussion, instead of just nodding along like what the rest do.
The Short Story
This story, The Rubbish Dump, take place in Malawi, somewhere in Africa. The main characters of this story are Joey, a kid around the age of ten and Mazambezi, an old man who collects rubbish with his wheelbarrow (note : Mazambezi isn't his real name, it's another word for rubbish collector). What I learned from this story was the people in Africa in those days were very poor. They had to collect rubbish to earn money and some of them were forced to starve for days and at last, died of hunger. People there were poorly treated and only the rich ones get to enjoy their lives properly.
