People Without Social Medias Are Lifeless, No?

Recently, I chatted with one of my juniors on my computer via Facebook Messenger. It was just a plain old boring conversation until he suddenly asks me if I have Instagram. I replied him I used to have one. He continues to question if I have other social medias like Snapchat, Twitter etc. I told him besides Facebook and WhatsApp, I don’t use other social medias.

He was surprised and stated, ‘You don’t even have Facebook Messenger?! Then how are you talking to me? Using the computer?’

I was like, ‘Yeah, what’s wrong with it?’

He answered, ‘You’re so lifeless man.’

Ouch. No wonder every teenager has more than 2 social medias on their phone. I’m not trying to be ‘outdated’ but you can’t deny the fact that not everyone needs a social media to survive. Ironically, I’m not one of those social media addicts. I don’t need to check my social medias from day to night, stalking the numbers of my followers, gain attention by showing off every single thing I possessed nor interested in sharing my personal life.

My junior picked the wrong person to argue with. I remarked on his statement with the best sentence I could thought of so I could ‘shut’ him.

‘I don’t need social medias to be life-ful.’

He indeed became speechless. He only commented a ‘wow’ and started another topic.

I was wondering why would people be lifeless without social medias? I mean like there are other stuffs that ought to be discovered in the internet, so many websites, so many things to see, yet out of all, why social medias? Was it because we, as in those wise people, who rarely uses social medias to brag about our daily lives are counted as ‘outdated’ person?

I agree social medias are platforms designed where you show off your cool things to your friends and I absolutely have no intentions going against that idea. However, was it really necessary to have more than 2 social medias in your phone? I don’t think so. I want to tell those who are desperate to seek attention by spamming in their Instagram stories, those who are jealous about their friend who always gets the good stuff, and those who doesn’t have any social medias:

Hey guys, my name is Xin. I start owning my personal phone since 2015. It has been four years. Back then, I have 5 social medias: Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp in my phone (YouTube not counted!). On 2016, I ran an Instagram fan account for my favorite anime, I had around 2.5k followers but after a year, I decided to shut it down as the anime wasn’t popular anymore. Also, on 2017, I uninstalled Tumblr and Messenger since they’re making my phone ‘laggy’. I’d never logged into both Tumblr and Instagram ever since. What remains in my phone is just Facebook and WhatsApp. I occasionally downloaded Messenger for group projects, if not used, I’ll uninstall it.

They say people without social medias are lifeless, I’m going to prove them wrong. I started surviving with my only 2 social medias for 2 years. Yet am I dead? No, obviously, or else how am I typing this blog?

Do I have friends? Duh, excuse me? Even I’m not a cool kid nor a person who likes socializing, at least I have real friends, whether they’re trustworthy or fakers. Virtual friends in social medias don’t last for long, trust me.

Then how am I going to follow the trend without social medias, you ask. Easy. Don’t all of you like gossiping? Sit among your gang and eavesdrop their conversation. I guarantee you will immediately know what’s happening around without the need to turn on your phone: which dog pooped in the teacher’s house, who bought the new iPhone, who failed Add Maths and even their plans for the future, you’ll instantly got a grasp on all of them!
