Dear Mr. Kilmer

Dear Mr. Kilmer is a story about a boy name Richard Knight
who loves writing poem. However, this unique hobby of his despise most of his
classmates and his family. They say it’s a sissy thing to do. However, this doesn’t
make Richard back down. After listening to Mrs. Hansen reading a poetry by Joyce
Kilmer, Richard decided to write a letter to him who was going to war. He also
befriended on of his classmate, Hannah, a German girl who was considered as a
betrayer for their nation due to the war. Their journey starts when Mr. Kilmer
replied Richard’s message. From then on, things started to change.
Dear Mr. Kilmer taught me to make a stand on anything that
we think it’s right. Richard was looked down by his brother and his father was
lowkey against him writing poem at the first place. But this doesn’t break
Richard’s will. He continues making poems though there are time he felt like
giving up. His determination burned brighter than his despair and this makes
him a successor in the future. He did succeed.
Besides that, it also reflects the strength of friendship. When
Mrs. Hansen asked the class to sign a card to show their support for the
Schemers (because they are German), the entire class didn’t do so, except for
Richard. Hannah was called a Hun for being a German, despite that, Richard
still remain best friends with her. He wasn’t scared of the class threatening
him for being friends with Hannah. He also defended her a lot of times. In real
life, we all wanted a real friend like Richard. Even if you know the whole
world, when you’re in trouble, maybe only a few are willing to lend their
hands.
Although I’m not into poems or reading this kind of genre,
but overall the book is amazing. It talks about the struggle of a teenager. There
are also some bombastic sentences I can apply to my essay and I learnt a few new
vocabularies. Maybe I would read again when I feel bored.
